Royal and Imperial Haplogroups

BeaumarchaisA blogger on Eupedia’s genetics forum has deduced the haplogroups of many European kings and queens from living descendants who have been tested. It has long been known that mtDNA haplogroup H dominated the lines of Europe’s aristocracies, while Y chromosomal R1b was the most common male lineage. Prince Phillip exhibits the stereotypical genes in this regard. More interesting than the royal personages listed are those that haven’t yet made the list, like Elizabeth I or Charlemagne. It would be interesting to know what the mitochondrial DNA was of Elizabeth’s mother Anne Boleyn or what Charlemagne’s male lineage was.

One fascinating observation of the blogger is, “All kings of France supposedly belonged to haplogroup G2a3 (Y-DNA).” G2a makes up 5 to 10% of Mediterranean Europe but is rare in Northern Europe. It is believed to have originated with metalworking peoples from the Caucasus or Anatolia who accompanied the R1b-dominant Indo-Europeans on their conquest of Europe in the 3rd millennium BCE.

My DNA and Tree of Ancestors Swann, Reay, Allen and Raine make me the True King of England, My confirmed Y-DNA is R-BY41654 And Confirmed mtDNA is H1g1

    • My great grand fathers ruled Scotland and England Martin Jonathon Swann please see a mental health professional as your family is not related to the royal family of Europe Im a Stewart decendant

I’m sure that the Royal lineage is tainted and possibly illegitimate. I am related to William the Conqueror. Charlemagne, Rollo, Chlodius Merovingian, Walter of the Franks , Frankus (1st King of the Franks, Marcomber 1 (King of Troy), and Prium “the Shepard Prince of Troy” around 1300 BCE. My lineage is full of Kings, Holy Roman Emporers and Aristocracy and I can document all of this. But do I think that I should be a King? Not really sure. But I think that I should have some honorary papered title.

  2. I just did a 23 and me. I found out I had a this in my DNA. I don’t know my family at all. I am do have the anitolia 1% of it which is striking to be reading this. I have my 23 and me DNA results. I would like to find out more on what this is. Thank you and feel free to email me. This is a puzzle and journey

I feel that more Haplo Es are coming out of the woodwork. It is the largest and most widely tested Haplo group. It would make sense from the old kingdoms of Egypt (BCE1400 to 1900), then Israel (rising to prominence in BCE 1000 with King David), then the Babylonians in BCE 600, followed by the Medes and Persians BCE 400, Greeks BCE 300 and finally Rome/ Italy BCE 150 to 5th century AD- would be dominated by Haplo Es. Yes Haplo Rs appear to be DNA from invading viking nations but amongst the royals and nobles descending from ancient kings, would make sense for Haplo Es to dominate the gene pool.

    • McDonald… your comment puzzles me. Haplogroup E is the majority around Saudi Arabia and strong in Greece. DNA discovered that the ancient hominids 400,000 years ago in Greece were the true ancestors of all man today outside of Africa. Originally science believed that the people 400,000 years ago and cooking meat in Greece were a separate group. It was… C/T. That group 400,000 years ago crossed the waters and discovered Neanderthal and others along with a very big world. I always felt that we come from Cain and something about certain E1’s always clashed with me but we both seemed to think we were Cain. This group 400,000 years ago is our link. The people in Greece vanished 250,000 years ago which is when B in Tanzania became very strong. They also cooked meat and practice most of what we did. From 250,000 years ago to about 90,000 years ago our people moved to many parts of Asia. This is where C and F split more apart. E1 comes from C group which collectively makes up about 20% of the world. Close to 80% come from F. R1b and many others around the world came from F. More importantly the group R1 came from K2a which was found among 3 hunters that dominated the northern part of the world 40,000 years ago. K2a also had strong dominance in Polynesia area and is linked with Australia Aboriginal. That area flooded much like doggerland did later on. Doge islands around the India-Australia stretch practiced early surfing and rafting. The technology likely existed even before this however the island grouping drove people to bounce around often. Stories of sultans on flying carpets emerged. These groups later spread out all over the world by water and land both. Traditionally the kings never kept the same mitochondria or woman period. However the groups E and G along with I often swear by the need to keep one woman as queen or whatever and always keep that one mitochondria. This has proven time and again to cause wide spread genetic flaws and other problems. Most men who followed this never populated as you would have wanted. I find it also interesting that you are a McDonald. I come from Campbells and most of English, British, Celtic uprisings had bloody histories of killing off anybody not from those three groups. R1a survived the warfare despite being from Scandinavian Vikings. When it comes to Vikings, most the groups I, G, R1a, R1b, they all jumped on boats and dominated the waters like old times. After the fact, Campbells would take control of the watery stretch protecting north of traditional Strathclyde. Oddly enough E1 is one of the most rare male groups in the bloodlines so far. We now live in America and things are changing. Hopefully we can find some way to balance and work together as a global unity tribe. WWW means much more to me than most will ever understand. Now that we have dna to work out my madness, I am actually able to understand what we can do in the future to bring the dream to reality. We can be a global hunting tribe working together once again. 🙂

U5b2a1a and R-S5201 any connections to Royal descent here?

According to Family Tree DNA, my paternal haplogroup is M269. A cousin who I traced from Australia stated we descend from the Earls of Tullibardine and back further possibly to Geoffrey of Anjou.
The Murrays married into the Stewarts (Dorothea Stewart and William Murray) and via a Canadian genealogist I am 11th Cousin to Queen Elizabeth II via that line. I would like very much to hear your views please…many thanks. I can provide what I have for your perusal.

    • Hi, This is a genealogy comment/question rather than a genetic one, but you may very well be a cousin to Queen Elizabeth II. Most of the early settlers who became landholders in Virginia claimed to be descendants of William the Conqueror.

  6. I have just had my DNA results back and matching DNA segments on both father and Mother’s side of French royal houses English Merovingian Belgian Austrian Spain Greek Medici 10+clans Hapsburgs Russian actually to many to list but my first incarnation was iO born of Melia daughter of oceanus my incarnation seem to match my DNA results is this possible?

  7. An H1c here. My nearest “in line” royalty is King Henry I and his queen, Eagdyth [Matilda/Maud] of Scotland as they were my 29th great grandparents. After King Henry II, my grand parentage runs dry and I am merely a cousin…but I am a cousin to all of them in various closeness. I am also a cousin of Queen Elizabeth but like with Danny Dyer [actor] we are not close enough to meet up for a cream tea. However, Prince Philip was an H (mtDNA) ; R1b (Y-DNA) so maybe we are more closely connected on the DNA front than others. Whilst the H1c DNA is most common you might think it would run rampant through Europe including royals, but of course that is not the case. One thing I wish for is that many of these tree-building sites do not show how specifically close a person is to people in their tree when they show their DNA results apart from Wikitree. But I really wish they would not just show the results of the Y-DNA for the men but would also show the mtDNA for them as well. It would help us ladies who can’t find out whether we are related to the gentlemen in our line. Mind, I do know there is a lot more to it than this but it would be a help.

And yes, by the way, Prince Philip and I were cousins as well.

I had a remote viewer once tell me that I have family in Edinburgh and I really needed to check this out. I did a dna test around 2 years ago and traced this back to Tureg, Fezzen. My dna haplogroup is H1. I just looked up the dna for royalty and alot in Scotland is haplogroup H. I just find this very interesting.

  9. J2b2a1a1a1b2 (PH1601) is my main Y-DNA and my mtDNA Distribution is tied to E1b1a – Ramesses III and almost an even split with U5b Rudolf I of Habsburg, Duke of Austria and Styria, King of Bohemia, and titular King of Poland (1282-1307)

  11. My father’s Y DNA is a little rare, it’s R-S25234 and said to be linked somehow to the house of Burbon, Wettin and Bathory. His family is from the east coast and has been in the USA since the start. Do you know anything about this Y DNA?

    • K. Farrington,

Hello, we are related via the Y DNA of your father. Here is what I know and what I have been told.

My line is from the area of the Black Forest in Germany about 20 miles from Freiburg, Germany. That line is traced back to approximately 1550, in the Grand Duchy of Baden.

Many years ago, around 15 – 20 years, I was contacted by an individual with the same Y DNA. He was of the last name Levi. He informed me his DNA traced back to Spanish Netherlands, in an area known as Flanders. He informed me, at the time I was the 3rd individual ID’d with R-S25234. He informed me another family in Scotland by the name Carter was also from the Spanish Netherlands. Levi informed me our relative going by the name Carter (he changed their last name when they immigrated to Scotland), had married outside the religion and was tossed out of the Jewish faith. Levi’s family departed Spanish Netherlands during the war between Spain and England (late 1500’s early 1600’s). They initially went to Portugal and Spain, then on to Barbados, where the family established the 1st Synagog in the Western Hemisphere. After many years some of the family moved on to several different Caribbean Island with one family going to Jamaica where they established Jamaica 1st and later 2nd Synagogs. The Levi family is still connected to those sysnagogs in Jamaica.

Hi R. Leffler and thank you for your answer!

What you said is very interesting, so does this mean my dad’s Y DNA is Jewish? It’s funny you mention “Barbados” because in researching my Farrington line, which looks like it came to MA in the early-mid 1600’s, it’s thought his Farrington came by way of England to Barbados and on the MA.

I know we’re talking about Y-DNA, but I find only a handful of people on my Farrington side that we share DNA with, compared to my father’s mother’s side, which is a lot, so I was always wondering about this lack of connection.

You mentioned “Flanders”, on my dad’s side he has a couple of line that go back to Flanders through Royal lines (William Goddard & Peter Worden), but I guess this doesn’t figure into the Y-DNA since it’s through females.

One other thing, in researching his Farrington line in England, one of the lines says it go’s back to a “de Mellis/Meols” in England who deeded a place/area called Farington to a son, so his name was changed to Farington from de Meols, but I’m not sure about this really or what kind of name Meols/Mellis is. The only thing in my personal DNA from my dad’s side that’s odd, is a ” .9 from Sardinia”, and we have no idea where this came from.

Anyway, again Thank You so much for answering and sharing your great info., please let me know anything else that may pop up.

      • I believe my father’s dna is R-S25234 as that is the haplogroup of his first cousin who he shares a surname with. My father died before dna was an aid to genealogy. I am trying to find out more about this haplogroup right now. My father’s last name was Fridenberg…Americanized. From dna matches (I do have his sister’s dna) the name was Freudenberg in Germany. Thank you for your comment. I’ve read that this haplogroup was mainly from the British Isles. Would that mean that my line immigrated from there to the Netherlands and from there to the Black Forest region of Germany? Is there any more information you could tell me? Many thanks to you and the person who originally asked the question, K. Farrington.

Hi, everyone my dad’s Y-DNA is R-BY122236 and my mtDNA is H1i2a not sure what that means so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Jennifer

  13. Hello, my eighth grandmother was the queen of Sweden. Hedvig Elisabeth charlotta. Her daughter lovisa who “died at birth” did not die. But moved back to Germany and married 2 grandsons of Frederick the great. History said he never had kids either , but he had at least 4 daughters and a son David Von Splittgerber. I’m trying to prove to Sweden that her daughter never died. I did dna testing and have all the royal houses through both Frederick and charlotta, and many more. Now it’s hard because they are related. But is there enough sequencing done to show I am related to them separately? Like oh you’re related to Frederick so of course it show you are related to charlotta. Ideally it would be great to get actual dna samples, but I’m trying to cover what I can before I get that far.
