Portuguese people are an ethnic group indigenous to Portugal, which is in the west of the Iberian Peninsula of Southwestern Europe.
Portuguese descend from the pre-Celtic, proto-Celtic and Celtic peoples who inhabited the western Iberian Peninsula, such as the Celtici, Lusitanians (proto-Celtic / para-Celtic) and the Gallaeci (Celtic), forming the core ethnic identity of the nation, who were then Latinized (Romanized) by the Romans. The Suebi, the Buri, the Visigoths and the Moors are minor segments that had a small influence on the Portuguese ethnic culture.
Portuguese communities and large Portuguese diasporas are found around the globe. More than 100 million Brazilians have significant Portuguese ancestry (journals.plos.org). There are nearly 1.5 million Portuguese Americans, 1.3 million in Portuguese Venezuelans, 1.2 million in Portuguese people in France and over 400,000 Portuguese Canadians who have Portuguese ancestry.
There are eight data sets that have been incorporated into DNA Consultants’ method.
- The Portuguese – White population data represent DNA samples from 146 unrelated individuals involved in paternity cases requested by the court. All individuals and their parents were natives of Portugal (Portuguese people), mostly from the southern region. Samples were obtained by the Forensic Biology Laboratory at the Institute of Legal Medicine in Lisbon, and by the Dept. of Legal Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Lisbon. Lisbon (Portugal-Lisbon) is the capital of Portugal, which is titled the Portuguese Republic (Portugal).
- The Portuguese – Northern A population data represent DNA samples from 427 unrelated individuals born in the northern part of Portugal, north of the Douro River (Norte Region, Portugal; Porto). Samples were obtained by the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto in Portugal, as well as the university’s Faculty of Sciences.
- The Portuguese – NorthernB population data represent DNA samples from 108 unrelated individuals born in the northern part of the Portuguese Republic, north of the Douro River (Norte Region, Portugal; Porto), and from individuals of the Galicia region in the northwest corner of the Kingdom of Spain (Spain). Samples were obtained by the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology at the University of Porto in Portugal, and by the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
- The Portuguese – Northern C population data represent DNA samples from unrelated individuals born in the northern part of Portugal, north of the Douro River (Norte Region, Portugal; Porto). Samples were obtained by the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto in Portugal, as well as the university’s Faculty of Sciences.
- The Portuguese – Centralpopulation data represent DNA samples from 114 individuals in the Portuguese Republic’s (Portugal) Centre region, which includes the districts of Aveiro, Castelo Branco, Coimbra,Guarda. Leiria, Portalegre, Santarem, and Viseu.Samples were obtained by the Institute of Legal Medicine in Coimbra, Portugal.
- The Portuguese – Northern Dpopulation data represent 250 unrelated individuals from Portugal who were sampled in 2004 by the Delegacao do Porto do Instituto Nacional de Medicina Legal in Porto, Portugal.
- The Portuguese – Northern E population data represent 200 unrelated individuals from the north of Portugal who were sampled in 2004 by the National Institute of Legal Medicine, Delegation of Porto, Portugal.
- The Portuguesepopulation data represent DNA samples from 150 randomly selected individuals from Portugal. Samples were provided by the database release sorted by marker and country of the European Network of Forensic Institutes.
