My ethnicity became an issue in my genealogical studies. I was always told that we were Scottish, English, Irish. My Euro DNA told a very different story. I have more Southeastern Europe (Turkey) and Mideastern (Jewish) ancestry than I do Northern Europe. This knowledge enabled me to know that I am a descendent of an early group of settlers in VA and NC that were Turks and Jews - some call them Melungeons. Also, I have a Chinese ancestor about ten generations ago. I am very grateful for this information.

I'm pretty new at this, so take what I have to say accordingly. I had no trouble accessing the DNA Consulting webpage and thought the page attractive, not cluttered. I clicked on "Which test is best for me?" and ran the DNA Wizard and got Y-STR DNA -- father's direct male ancestry. Okay.
The data about this laboratory were impressive. This service is going to do something for "commercialization of biotechnology." Forensics for criminals (or the innocent) interests me, also ancestry of ethnic groups. "Identity proficiency testing." There are probably people who really need this. 3,000 collection centers -- impressive. Legal documentation could be sent. Useful. Testing could be fun at anniversaries, etc. Excellent ideas for gift certificates here, and the ordering information was quite clear. That the DNA sample will be kept on hand for 10 years will be useful to a lot of serious customers.
It was impressive to read that personalized history would accompany results of the test. I can see that the staff is perfectly educated to write such results. Still, some of it seems to me a little like palm reading or fortune telling . . . and I know DNA is much more specific and credible than that. Conclusion: The field is so new that I don't claim to understand it, though I'm going to try the Basic Male for my father's line. I haven't even read much about it in all my reading of the New York Times. Nevertheless, I think DNA Consulting and Sorenson Genomics are probably really on to something big. . . . If this helps other customers, I'm glad. . . . If it isn't what people expected, just remember I'm only a little old woman in tennis shoes from Indiana.

Any of the DNA tests and research packages are unique gifts for birthdays or for Christmas or Hanukkah, especially for folks curious about tracing their deeper connections. The research that accompanies each test is detailed and extensive, and the population and ancestral migration maps personalize ancient history. Unlike other businesses, Dr. Yates is readily available for phone conversations. He takes the time to explain test results and will suggest ways to apply them to genealogical searches. His willingness to share his expertise is unusually gracious.

These are wonderful people, smart, sophisticated, and with a well-researched mission to be useful and helpful to DNA research. As a non-scientist, I don't have credentials, but, as an honorary Melungeon, I am very well-acquainted with both Dr. Yates and Professor Hirschman through their genetics work on this Appalachian ethnic minority.
I'm supposedly descended on my maternal grandmother's side from the Gaon of Vilna. His first four generations and surnames can be found on the web but the following nine generations are in "Eliyahu's Branches," a rare and costly book. Does anyone have a copy or other information? Does a Mary or a Miriam who was a daughter of a rabbi and who married Max Milton (ne' Mendel Koltun) in Poland/Lithuania in the late 1890s show in any later entries? Their children were Charles, Selina, Dora, Nathan, and Julian.

DNA Testing is on the cutting edge of the exploding field of "anthropogenealogy." I have worked with Dr. Donald Panther-Yates for the last 4 years. I find him to be very insightful, helpful, and family oriented. He is very dedicated to his hobby, his work, and his "families." I have learned much about many of my Ancestors, among which are Melungeons, Southeastern Indians, and Spanish and French Colonials in the South. He is an expert in those groups of people.
