LINKAGE DISEQUILIBRIUM

Genetic Disorder Medical Literature Search

Genes, especially those we receive from our mother, can transmit inherited disorders as well as immunities to disease. There are over 4,000 genetically linked diseases known to medical science, and many of these occur with greater frequency in certain ethnic groups than in others. The study of human genes and the disorders and other traits with which they are associated is called “genetic linkage and transmission disequilibrium of marker haplotypes” and has important consequences for family medical history.

Can be added or ordered on the basis of a Premium Female DNA Test or only.

A Linkage Disequilibrium Upgrade adds a scientific literature search to your Ancestry Report. This search for mention of your haplotype and unique polymorphisms includes but is not limited to the following databases:

1. MIM: Mendelian Inheritance in Man, an encyclopedic catalog of genetic disorders. This is the “bible” for scientific papers reporting research on autosomal, X-linked, Y-linked and mitochondrial genes. McKusick, V. A., gen. ed. (1998) Mendelian Inheritance in Man, 3 vols. Baltimore: The Johns Hopkins University Press. OMIM is the online version, available at the Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man
2. Mitomap, a human mitochondrial genome database with thousands of references, available online at Mitomap.
3. GDB: The official worldwide database at Johns Hopkins University for the annotation of the human genome. Originally used to organize chromosome mapping data during the earliest days of the human genome project, the polymorphism data were also used for cytogenetics, forensic testing, and hunting disease genes. Since then, the number of labs doing genetic testing has grown a thousand fold, thanks to the development of PCR and the release of the draft human genome. A free community resource now building forensic and human genomic identity data, available online at GDB.
4. PubMed: A vast bibliography of medical books and journal articles at the National Library of Medicine. Available online through Entrez at PubMed.
5. Browse our library for articles about Linkage Disequilibrium and genetic disorders.

A Disequilibrium Upgrade also includes referrals to disease and disorder research and support associations, so that you can follow up on your report by learning more about such genetically-linked disorders as familial Mediterranean fever, Alzeheimer’s, heart disease and stroke, and thalassemia. A sampling of these is given below:

Jewish Genetic Diseases, a Mazornet guide. Includes: Breast and Ovarian Cancers, Colon Cancer, Cystic Fibrosis, Familial Mediterranean Fever, Gaucher Disease, Machado Joseph Disease, Tay-Sachs Disease, and Ulcerative Colitis.

The Melungeon Health and Education Support Network at http://www.melungeonhealth.org/. Includes Familial Mediterranean Fever, fibromyalgia, and certain anemias.

Genetic and Rare Diseases Information Center: a service of the National Human Genome Research Institute and Office of Rare Diseases at the National Institutes of Health http://www.genome.gov/10000409.
